Will a scratch cause a CD or DVD to not work?

Question:

Will a scratch cause a CD or DVD to not work?

Answer:

This all depends upon the intensity of the scratch. Because standard CDs and DVDs have a protective layer, these discs can usually withstand several scratches with no issues. However, if a scratch is very intensive this could cause the CD not to work properly or for it to be un-operational.

It is possible to encounter any of the below issues if a CD is scratched:

  • The CD that is scratched will not work.
  • Error will occur indicating that the CD cannot be read. For example: CDR-101.
  • DVD Discs will have distortion in certain sections of the movie.
