To reduce the size of an image
or to remove non-important aspects of an image. For example, you may
have a picture
of several people, but may only want to have a picture of one person
from that picture. You could make a selection
around that person and crop
the image so only the person is the image.
Another common mistake seen on the Internet
is users
who scan a picture using a flatbed
scanner and do not crop their image leaving a large portion
around the image blank
or white. Cropping the image so only the image is seen will help
reduce the overall size of the image and increase the download
times.
The image to the right is a visual example of what a non-cropped
image and copped image may look like. As can be seen the original
image has a lot of wasted space making the image visually larger
but also larger in size it occupies on the computer. Cropping the
image makes the image removes all unused or unwanted portions of
the image.
