Sometimes referred to as a disk jacket or disk sleeve, the disk envelope is a paper or plastic sheath that a 5.25-inch disk and its jacket is stored. These were used because the 5.25" diskettes had unprotected areas that allowed the computer to read from the diskette but when not in the computer were vulnerable to dust, dirt, and hair.
