Created by Jonathan Abrams and released in March 2003, Friendster was a social networking and social gaming site. It allowed users to create profiles, connect with friends, and share content like media and links with individuals in their social network. As with similar sites, Friendster was used to organize events, find dates, and discover new hobbies and musical interests.

Fun fact

The name "Friendster" is a portmanteau of the words "Friend" and "Napster."

Friendster history

The platform gained significant popularity, especially in Asia, during its early years. However, it had technical issues and scalability problems as its user base grew rapidly. These issues and competition from other social networking platforms like MySpace and Facebook, led to a decline in its user base.

Friendster rebranded itself as a social gaming platform in 2011 and discontinued its social networking services. Despite its eventual decline and closure on June 14, 2015, Friendster holds a place in Internet history as one of the pioneering platforms that created the social media landscape we know today.
