| Introduced
in 1998, X.500 is a CCITT X series standard
that builds upon the standardization of the X.400, extending the protocol to include
address formats. X.500 is a directory service that can contain
information about users, departments, organizations, or other aspects
of users or locations that can be searched and referenced to help
locate a particular user or group.
Today, LDAP
is taking precedence over X.500.
