I use Windows Vista. I dont care what people think about it.

I also use Windows XP, ME, 2000, occasionally 3.1, Mac OS 9 (a horrible OS), and Linux.
It depends on the computer I am using, how fast it is, and what I use it for

I actually prefer Windows Server 2003 . . . compared to XP I've found it's faster and more stable, and actually has better hardware support, just needs a bit of tweaking to convert it from a server OS to a workstation one.
It also runs better than Win2K on my older PC.
Yes it's legal, from my college.

Mainly XP for me. I've had a short stint with Vista but it just uses too many resources compared to XP. If I had a rig capable of DX 10 gaming I would probably be running Vista on it.

I could see myself moving over to Ubuntu for at least some of my daily computer tasks though. At the moment I'm just playing around with the OS but I must say I'm really impressed. Ubuntu wont be replacing XP though since I still need to use Visual Studio.

I thought DOS only went up to 6.22....... ???

I guess for me it has to be Windows XP. I would use Linux, but, well, I just don't have it installed right now. :(
Oh, and definitely not ubuntu... Why is ubuntu the only option for linux?

I use Xp or 2000-Pro because they are more stable than Windows 98 SE.

I liked 98 SE better than any other Windows.

Win 98 stability was questionable for regular users, but I used Win 98 for many years, and with proper housekeeping, I've never had a crash. I reinstalled Win 2K twice (over the top). Vista, not yet (only 1 month old system), but I used System Restore couple of times (I admit, pretty heavy "traffic" on this one).

    ... questionable

If you are going to say its bad, you have to back it up.

How is it full of bugs? It seems that most of the people who trash Vista have no reason other than "resource hog" that turns out to be valid.

Please consider why Vista is not a resource hog:
When XP came out, 1GB was considered higher-end hardware. Many laptops could only support 512MB. The same follows for processors. What did the average home computer have?

When Windows 3.1 came out, it recommended 4MB of RAM, with the system minimum of 2MB of RAM. Recall: Windows can only handle so much RAM. 64Bit versions of Windows XP/Vista (Professional/Ultimate) can handle a max of 128GB of RAM, non-home 64-bit editions could handle up to 8GB of RAM.
8GB of RAM, 4GB for home users. Vista Home Premium recommends 1GB of RAM. In truth, it requires half of that. XP Requires 128MB of RAM (but can be run on even lower requirements)
Our computers can handle more now, therefor, we can get resource hog operating systems.

Sure, you can run the older OS on a brand new computer. Windows 3.1 will startup in about 3 seconds on a 266MHz computer with 98MB of RAM, even if it cant allocate half the RAM it has avaliable.
I truly believe that the same argument will restart when the next version of Windows come out. People will say to stay with Vista... after all, Microsoft is a company, trying to make money.

I didn't mean that all of it was bad, the "eye candy" looks great, and third-party software companies are already designing programs for Vista. Grisoft has created AVG Free Edition for Vista. The new start menu is MUCH useful. Why go looking through the whole start menu muttering "where has that ****ing file gone" when you can just type in a few keywords? I don't know anything else about Vista since I use XP, but look forward to trying it.

And then there's linux. You can run it on a system with a 166MHz CPU, 8MB RAM, and 100MB HDD space (or less) and still be useful. On the flip side, linux can work insanely perfect with at least 4 quad core CPUs, +128GB RAM (not sure where it's at now), and ∞TB hdd space. It comes with few features (pocket linux) or tons of features (opensuse).

      Disable it...

Get to the Run dialog box, and type:
      msconfig

Then, make your way over to the Tools tab. Run "Disable UAC"
      And your done :)

If all you need is a firewall, then it's perfect. :) Actually right now, I'm refitting an old laptop to be a digital picture frame. Specs are 266 MHz cpu & 256mb ram. I've got Zenwalk installed so far, and the built in slideshow is running through the pics flawlessly and the cpu isn't getting hot hardly at all. :D It's using gnome for the window manager.

I like XP the best because of the version of DOS that it has (command prompt WHATEVER) It has a wider range of commands than 2k. I also like 3.1, though, I used it on an old old old computer but I was cool. Programs were easier to find.

It has DOS. Start your computer and tap F8 key before you see the boot logo.
Notice that one of the options is Safe Mode with Command Prompt;)

Windows XP does not have DOS. It has an emulator.

It has DOS. Start your computer and tap F8 key before you see the boot logo.
Notice that one of the options is Safe Mode with Command Prompt;)
That aint DOS, thats an emulation of DOS

Actual DOS is similar, but still different.

How does DOS 7.1 handle USB  devices ? ?
            Curious.

Several methods - have a look at bootdisk.com here altho' must admit my use of usb with Dos is by choice limited, would you believe I still print in vivid color using a dot-matrix? (Citizen GSX230 - now there's a beast of a machine!)

I was aware of the DOS USB drivers and thanx.
The only devices i would need them for would be my Flash drive units...

Actually if you want to get really technical about it, the command prompt isn't even a DOS emulation. It is a shell that provides a DOS like interface. The actual DOS emulation only occurs when you execute a DOS application.

Jeez, does it really matter? It does a lot of the same functions. I use it to make games or to shutdown my computer after a timeout.

or to shutdown my computer after a timeout.
Yes then it actually does matter. The shutdown feature is a native windows application, real dos (or even the emulated dos in XP if I'm not mistaken) wouldn't be able to call that command.
But the shell is a native application as well and is therefore able to execute shutdown.

And yes, I know, in the big scheme of the things this hardly matters. But if you're here to learn and want to know more about how windows works behind the scenes, this might be interesting to know.

That's another part of learning. You have to start with something you don't know. :P
