the 8800 what? dispite the higher model number, 9600GT performs a little better then the 8800GS 384mb.

From my understanding, the 8800 GT 512MB is still better than the new 9600 GT. I read a couple of professional reviews to confirm this because I just bought a 8800 GT 512MB, right before the 9600 was released.

It's Nvidia's new budget card. These are often a fair bit slower than the high end cards of the previous generation.
But by giving them a higher model number people buy them instead of buying an older (but still faster) card.

The 9600GT is a mid range card, whereas the 8800 series is a high end series.
The 8800GS is quite slow though, however a higher end card such as the 8800GT would definitely be faster than the mid range 9600GT.
That's generally how it goes, mid range cards aren't always better than the last gen high end cards.
