Window's Freeze During Startup

My Dell Laptop running XP starts up loading Windows OK until it gets to the Desktop screen at which point it freezes up showing only the screensaver, no Icons.

I have tried starting in Safe Mode but it does the same thing. I have also tried restarting from the last known good settings but that also does the same thing.

Open Task Manager and start a new process called explorer.exe

Thanx for the responses. Opening explorer.exe seemed to fix the major problem.

In my original post I should have said background not screensaver. The computer now boots up correctly. I still have a few other nagging problems that I am slowly weeding out. Thanks again for everyone's help.

well i think that your PC is infected try to make off your anti-virus and see how it works at that state i think your PC might need  to reinstall windows XP.

It's fine.

don't be so sure kpac i have been using xp for 4 years and been working with them and i think i know them maybe not as much as u maybe much more then u but i know them u think that if he reinstall the windows formatting all the computer he will have the same problem?

Well, I would try a system restore before reinstalling the whole OS.

well u can try it but if the system is infected it wont be helpfull because u know that the virus reproduce it self and the system will work for same days and will give the same problem again.

Any time I have a virus (/scare), system restore does the job fine.

Be aware that all types of malware now embed their wares in System Restore points...
