Hello,

Yesterday, (March 20th) I downloaded and installed a firewall from download.com called Filseclab Personal Firewall. Now I keep getting error messages from Explorer and Xfilter.
I will list them below:

EXPLORER caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at 0004:0000233e

XFILTER caused an invalid page fault in module XFILTER.EXE at 016f:00427890

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 016f:bff7a388

These errors happen right at the same time. Explorer is usually first, then Xfilter. After that, both programs shut down. I don't want to uninstall the firewall because somehow it caused the page loading in my internet connection to speed up exponentially. I just need these error messages to stop.

I'm using Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 6.0.
I have Hijack This and CCleaner installed if information is needed.
Thank you.
My status may say I'm online, but that don't necessarily mean I'm at the computer. Most likely, I'm asleep as I suffer from a number of health problems. Please forgive me if I take a while to reply to a post. m(_ _)m

Hello evilfantasy,

I used the link you provided, but I can't seem to find any info about the error messages I've been getting. Do you have any more suggestions?

QuoteError Message: Msgsrv32 Caused a General Protection Fault in User.exe

This error can be triggered more than one instance. Did you try the suggested fix in the link?

Haseo

Hello evilfantasy,

I tried the suggested fix, but I already know that the problem is caused by software, and that software will not load in safemode. It's a firewall that I obtained from download.com called Filseclab Personal Firewall.

XFILTER caused an invalid page fault in module XFILTER.EXE at 016f:00427890

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 016f:bff7a388

These two error messages appear more often then the "General Protection Fault" that appears.

It's probably a compatibility issue. I still have a 98 that I use now and then and many programs say they work with win98 but the truth is they simply don't.

Hello evilfantasy,

Just last night, I installed the Opera Browser onto my computer, and now everytime I close the browser, I get this error message:

Opera caused an invalid page fault in module OPERA.DLL at 016f:67e75cc5.

Opera executed an invalid instruction module NPSWF32.DLL at 016f:30055767.

Do you have any suggestions for this?

A few suggestions.

Under System Tools, System Information, Tools, System File Checker you will be able to extract any file from the install disk or check all files for missing, corruption or date etc. and replace them.

OR

You can Rename the existing file and extract a fresh copy from your Windows 98  CD
HOW TO: Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

Broni

Did you try to uninstall Filseclab Personal Firewall?
On Windows 98, I use Jetico (free) firewall with no problems.

I lost that CD ages ago and can't replace it.
Your instructions on how to "extract" are not clear to me. Can you explain them in step-by-step directions? I'm using Windows 98se. Thanks and I'm sorry.

I can't use Jetico because the program said my OS was incompatible.
I'm using a firewall called Safety.Net. (For now)
I uninstalled Filseclab Personal Firewall, and I still get the same error messages.

This one happens when I close Opera.

Opera executed an invalid instruction module NPSWF32.DLL at 016f:30055767.

This one happens when I visit a website. The address is www.dothack.com.
The error message happens right on the second page after I click on the USA link. This error also happened with Internet Explorer, before I switched to Opera.

I'm at a loss. I can't explain it better then what was in the link.

Do you have CCleaner? If not download that and give the computer a good cleaning.

Broni

Files like KERNEL32.DLL, and USER.EXE are Windows core files. It looks like your Windows installation is seriously corrupted. I can't figure any way to fix your problems without Windows CD.

Haseo

Hello Broni and evilfantasy,

Don't worry yourselves over this. Sometimes my computer mysteriously fixes its on problems. It's funny that way. Thank you both for your help. Please let me know if you figure out anything more. Meanwhile, I will keep trying.
