why do xp drive letters change?

Hi, Can someone please explain why the drive letters sometime change at random? Thank you!

I believe I have seen it happen occasionaly without any major system work. The reason it has my attention is that I used recovery console to format a partition and formatted the wrong one because the drive letter had changed since I last looked at it, just previous to the formating.
