Probably a simple one for you lot, but this is over my head.

I had my screen resolution set to 1280 x 1024 (i think, not 100% sure what it was to be honest.) but randomly started experiencing the laptop randomly going into sleep mode. I updated the graphics drivers, now the highest it will go to is 1280 x 800.

    Using:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450 with driver set: 10.1
    Windows Vista 32 bit.
    Hp Pavilion dv5

i used to be able to just go into control pannel and change this to a lot of different settings, but now when I try that way doesn't work, nor does Catalyst control center.

Any ideas? I'm reluctant to roll back the driver as since i've updated i've not any issues with it going into sleep mode.

1280 x 800 is a common native resolution found on notebook/laptop PCs.  My hunch is that's what yours is.  Exactly what model do you have?  Hp Pavilion dv5xxxx?    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodTopCategory?product=1132551&lc=en&dlc=&cc=us shows a whole series of models that start with dv5.

What does the native resolution have to do with the ability (or lack of ability) to change it?

native = maximum.  So, it can't go any higher.

1280 x 800 may, indeed, be the maximum resolution for his computer.  If not, then, yes, he should be able to change it a higher resolution.  That's why I asked for the specific model.

I'm almost embarrassed to tell you that I never knew that!
