Startup - msconfig. It'll prevent services from running, as well.

    Let's try brute force...
    Uninstall current Java.
    Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to clean up any leftovers.
    Quote
    Select the programs (Java, in our case) that you want in the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.
    Reboot.
    Try installation again.

      My fear is that if i go to add/remove and remove java, I will not be able to re install.  The n I will have nothing.................

      I understand what you're saying. It has to be your decision.
      You're pretty safe with 03 version, so you may keep looking for that Windows CD. Some day, everyone needs it, anyway.

          You have Recovery CD, so back up your data, pop the CD in, and follow instructions.
          It'll return your computer to day 1 state.
