A catfisher is a person who creates a fake online profile to deceive someone else. For example, a catfish could be a woman who creates a fake profile on an online dating website. Then, she could start a relationship with one or more people and make up a story to get money from them. Another example is someone who creates a fake Facebook account that resembles a friend so that they can view a certain person's private information.

A catfish intends to deceive one or more people into thinking you're someone else. If enough trust is gained, the victim will willingly send money or give away valuable information because they think they know the person. Unfortunately, with the anonymous nature of the Internet, anyone can pretend they're someone else.

Tip

Always be skeptical of anyone you meet online, even if it's a good friend; it could be someone pretending to be that friend. If someone asks for money or personal information, meet them in RL (Real Life) because most online communication methods (e.g., chat, voice chat, and video chat) can be faked.
