An interchangeable file is a file saved commonly without any formatting and can be opened with different computer software without making changes to the file. Because of formatting and proprietary nature, many files stored on computers are not interchangeable with competing platforms and software. Examples of interchangeable files are text files and PDFs (Portable Document Format).

Note

When dealing with a file that's not interchangeable, it must be modified or converted into another supported file format.
