10BASE5
Updated: 09/25/2024 by Computer Hope

Alternatively called Thick Ethernet or Thicknet, 10BASE5 is an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) standard for baseband Ethernet at 10 Mbps over a thicker version of the 10BASE2 coaxial cable. 10BASE5 has a maximum distance of 500 meters.
The cabling used with 10BASE5 is similar to RG-8, but has better shielding against electromagnetic interference and protects against fire damage. 10BASE5 networks require external transceivers to operate, as a workstation's digital signal must be converted to baseband.
