Alternatively called reload, reinstall is replacing software that's already installed. This troubleshooting step is commonly performed when a program has worked in the past but is now experiencing issues that cannot be resolved.

How to reinstall

Tip

Before performing any of the following steps, make sure the program has no available updates. An update can fix problems that reinstalling cannot.

To reinstall a program, game, or operating system, install the program as you did in the past. If prompted about the program or directory already existing, choose Continue to overwrite the existing installation.

Tip

If you need help installing software, see: How to install software.

If a reinstall doesn't work, uninstall the program, and then install the program again. If you're concerned about losing your data, back it up before uninstalling or reinstalling a program.

What can reinstalling fix?

Reinstalling a program can fix all of the following problems.

  • Corrupt or overwritten file(s).
  • Missing file(s).
  • Program errors.

Should I use reinstall or re-install in my writing?

Both versions of the word are correct. Some style guides may choose to use "re-install" with the hyphen, and others choose not to use the hyphen. However, once you've decided on the version you want to use, always use the same version in all your writing. Computer Hope has chosen to use "reinstall" with no hyphen in all its writing.
