Single-player game

Updated: 06/22/2024 by Computer Hope

A single-player game is a game with the ability to play without other real-life players. Other characters in the game are known as NPCs (Non-Player Characters) and are artificial characters that interact with you. In a single-player game, you follow a preprogrammed story, solve puzzles, or do other challenges.

Tip

Many single-player games may also have a multiplayer mode, which lets you play alone or with others.

Advantages of single-player game

Although you may not be able to play with your friends, a single-player game does have the following advantages.

  • Most single-player games don't require an Internet connection, meaning you can play anytime and anywhere.
  • A single-player game can be played at your own pace and paused and continued as you desire.
  • Difficulty levels are possible in single-player games, making them easier for all types of gamers.
  • Don't have to deal with trolls or other abusive players.
  • Single-player games require no additional subscription or fee to play after the game is purchased.

Disadvantages of a single-player game

Although many enjoy single-player games, they still have the following disadvantages.

  • Cannot play with friends or show off your achievements to others.
  • If you're interrupted you cannot pause a multiplayer game.
  • Competitive players may find the NPCs and other challenges too easy.
  • If not well designed, a single-player game can seem scripted or predictable and less immersive.
  • Because a single-player game cannot offer the same challenge as playing with others, most are played only once and often never finished.
