Software publishing

Software publishing describes the overall process of designing and distributing a software package or collection of software packages. With software publishing the software publisher is a collection of people and sometimes companies that develop non-custom software packages that are sold to many people or companies. Microsoft is a good example of a software publisher who publishes programs like Microsoft Excel to millions of people.
