Distorted video after increasing resolution in Windows.

Issue:

Distorted video after increasing the resolution in Windows.

Cause:

The resolution has been set higher than what is supported by the monitor, video card, or the drivers that are currently installed in the computer.

Solution:

To recover the picture in Microsoft Windows follow the below steps.

  1. Shut down the computer. If your display is distorted and you're unable to properly shut it down simply turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and as the computer is booting, enter Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode as it is starting press the F8 over and over until the Startup menu appears that allows you to select Safe Mode. Additional information about how to do this can be found on document CHSAFE.
  3. Once in Safe Mode, you should have a resolution that allows you to navigate through Windows.
  4. Change the resolution back to a lower setting by clicking Start, Settings, Control Panel and open Display; within the Display Properties window click the Settings tab and adjust the settings. If you are unsure what your original settings were, we recommend at least 800 x 600 with 256 colors or the lowest available setting.
  5. After the settings have been changed click Apply close out of all windows and reboot the computer.
  • If after following the above steps you are unable to increase the resolution or have other related video issues see document CH000191.
