Windows Setup requires 15728640 bytes available on your C: drive error.

Question:

Windows Setup requires 15728640 bytes available on your C: drive error.

Answer:

This error is generated when Windows detects the hard disk drive, but the hard disk drive is not formatted and/or does not have enough available space to install Windows. To resolve this issue, follow the below steps.

Format the hard disk drive

If you are attempting to erase the computer's hard disk drive and install Windows, make sure the hard disk drive is formatted. Often users will see this error after creating the partitions but not formatting the hard disk drive.

Additional information about formatting the hard disk drive and starting over can be found on document CH000186.

Erase some of the files on the hard disk drive

If you have files on the computer hard disk drive but do not wish to completely erase the computer and start over, delete files you no longer need on the hard disk drive. Often this can easily be achieved by deleting the previous windows installation (deltree C:\Windows /Y).

See our deltree and del MS-DOS commands for additional information about using these commands.
