How do I disable / enable AAM?

Question:

How do I disable / enable AAM?

Answer:

Drive manufacturer utilities

Our recommend solution for disabling / enabling AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management) on drives that have this feature is to use utilities available from your hard disk drive manufacturer.

If you're wanting to enable this feature but know the make / model of your drive, see document CH000497 for additional information on determining your drive.

Third-party solutions

Although not all drives with AAM will allow the user to disable this feature, you can still disable it using third-party utilities such as HDDScan.

Note: For users looking to disable AAM in the hopes of gaining extra performance from their computer, you will notice very little if any performance gain by disabling or reducing this feature, and will increase the overall noise generated from the drive. In addition, using a third-party utility such as HDDScan on a drive who's manufacturer doesn't support disabling AAM, disabling it can void your drives warranty.

Additional Information:

  • See our AAM dictionary definition for additional information and related links on this term.
  • Information about determining the type of hard disk drive you have in your computer can be found on document CH00497.
