IPv4

Short for Internet Protocol version 4, IPv4 is a network protocol defined in RFC 791 that is the primary Internet and Ethernet network transmission. Because IPv4 is only able to support 4,294,967,296 possible IP addresses and because of other limitations IPv6 is quickly becoming the next version IP and new software is slowly making the transition from IPv4.
