Referral code
A referral code is a unique combination of letters, numbers, or other characters provided by a company, service, or platform. It is used by users to direct others to another company, service, or platform for a mutual benefit.
For example, after signing up for a credit card, someone could be given a referral code to send to a friend. Upon doing so, the referrer (code sharer) and the new user (person using the code) may both receive a cash bonus.
Referral codes are used in many industries for marketing purposes. They encourage word-of-mouth advertisement and incentivize existing users to promote a product or service to those in their social circles. The perks received through referral codes include discounts, credits, cash rewards, extended trial periods, or other incentives.

How can I identify a referral code URL?
A URL (uniform resource locator) containing a referral code or that gets compensated is identified by the parameters in the URL. The following example URL points to Amazon's search for "computer" with the tracking parameter "tag=computerhope," which tells Amazon who referred the visitor and who to compensate.

Our example does not apply to all URLs; the identifying parameter can be labeled anything and doesn't have to be "tag." This example only shows how the Amazon Associates program works.
Other sites may not use a URL parameter, but instead have a web page. For example, the URL below is a fictitious example of such a page.

Finally, other sites may have a promo code to insert when purchasing a product or service. For example, if we were an influencer, we might say enter the promo code "computerhope" when making a purchase at Amazon.
Does Computer Hope have a referral program?
No. Computer Hope is a free site that sells nothing and does not need a referral program. Any individual, site, or service claiming otherwise is involved in a scam.
