VDI

VDI may refer to any of the following:

1. Short for virtual desktop infrastructure, VDI was coined by VMware to describe desktop virtualization, where a user's desktop is delivered to their device over a network in real time.

A VDI may be used in a corporate environment to distribute a desktop experience to areas that may not have technicians available when support is required. For example, a bank may use a VDI, so a technician isn't needed at every branch. A VDI also allows users to access their desktops on devices not designed for their desktop operating system. For example, accessing a Windows desktop using a smartphone.

Difference between a VM and VDI

A VM (virtual machine) is the software that creates the virtual services using hypervisor. The VDI is one of the applications the virtual machine can run that allows desktop virtualization.

2. Short for virtual disk image or VirtualBox Disk Image, VDI is a file used with VirtualBox.

3. With GEM (Graphics Environment Manager), GEM VDI (virtual device interface) added the ability for GEM to have multiple fonts, raster drawings, and viewports.
