Natural keyboard

Updated: 02/06/2025 by Computer Hope

Also called an adjustable keyboard, ergonomic keyboard, or split keyboard, a natural keyboard is a keyboard with naturally positioned keys to reduce strain and prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The picture below shows an example of an ergonomic keyboard, the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard is only one example of a split keyboard. Some split keyboards (e.g., the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard) allow the left and right sides of the keyboard to be positioned independently, providing more or less spacing for the hands.

Tip

We highly recommend trying one of these keyboards before making a purchase. Some users may find these keyboards cumbersome or difficult to use.

Why choose a natural keyboard?

Positioning the keys in a more natural position for your hands it reduces strain on your wrists and hands, especially during prolonged typing sessions. With a more natural position, you can type longer and with less strain if you suffer from RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries). This natural position may also help with improving typing accuracy and speed for some people. Programmers, office workers, and writers who've never tried a natural keyboard should consider trying these keyboards as they can make their days working on the computer more enjoyable.
